Is Loaded Tea Safe During Pregnancy in 2023?

May 14, 2022 by Janey Danes Leave a Comment

Loaded teas contain a high amount of caffeine. But it depends on the ingredients in loaded teas. Thus, is loaded tea safe during pregnancy?

Keep reading to know more.

Is Loaded Tea Safe During Pregnancy?

Tea, in general, is safe during pregnancy as long as you drink up to two cups a day. One reason you need to limit your tea intake when pregnant is caffeine. And it’s one reason you might want to avoid loaded tea during pregnancy. It may not be safe for you and the baby.

Despite the health benefits, its high caffeine can be a disappointment to some.

Most loaded teas have 160 milligrams of caffeine. This is about two cups of coffee. The FDA states that 400 mg of caffeine a day is considered safe for healthy adults. However, you must remind yourself that caffeine affects people differently. Thus, if you don’t want such an amount, don’t go to a nutrition club. Instead, make your own sugar-free drink.

Why Caffeine is Bad While Pregnant?

Caffeine is a stimulant. Thus, it can increase your blood pressure. It’s not recommended during pregnancy. That’s why green tea isn’t advisable if you’re pregnant.

Furthermore, caffeine increases how frequently you urinate per day. Frequent urination reduces your body fluid levels leading to dehydration.

Another problem with caffeine during pregnancy is that it crosses the placenta of your baby. You can handle caffeine but your baby can’t because your unborn child has no enzymes required to metabolize it. Thus, don’t drink loaded tea when pregnant. But you can use other Herbalife products upon the recommendation of your doctor.

In the later stages of your pregnancy, caffeine can cause your baby’s sleep pattern. Because it’s a stimulant, it can keep you and your baby awake.

Can Loaded Teas Cause Birth Defects?

There are no studies on this subject. But there are studies on animals showing caffeine could cause premature labor, preterm delivery, reduced fertility, and birth defects.

Even though there are conclusive studies done on humans to determine the effects of caffeine, it’s better to be safe. Just avoid loaded teas, coffee, and other caffeinated drinks.

What Tea is Unsafe During Pregnancy?

Most teas have caffeine. Black, white, matcha, green chai, and oolong teas come from Camellia sinensis. It’s a plant that contains caffeine, which is a natural stimulant.

Thus, you might want to avoid or limit your intake of black, white, matcha, green, chai, and oolong teas while pregnant.

If you can’t function without caffeine, you can still take tea. However, make sure that your consumption doesn’t exceed 300 mg. You may try other nutritional supplements without caffeine and artificial sweeteners.

Here are some teas that are safe during pregnancy

Raspberry leaf

It’s safe and it’s believed to shorten labor. It also helps your uterus for birth.

Peppermint

This is also safe during pregnancy because it may help in relieving gas, stomach pain, and heartburn. Unfortunately, clinical studies are lacking to support these benefits.

Ginger

It’s considered possibly safe. Ginger tea may reduce nausea and vomiting. However, if you’re going to use dried ginger, make sure you don’t use more than 1 gram a day.

Lemon Balm

This tea is possibly safe. It can be used to relieve your anxiety or irritability. It is also useful if you can’t sleep.

It’s important to note that there are no conclusive studies about the safety of these teas during pregnancy. Thus, you should consult with your doctor about them. It may be safe to drink one glass of tea a day.

If you’re not pregnant though, this energy drink may help your mental performance. It can also boost your energy.

What Kind of Tea Can Cause Miscarriage?

Tea is generally safe. But not all teas are safe during pregnancy. Just like with food, there are teas that you don’t want to consume while pregnant.

Even though peppermint tea is safe while you’re pregnant, you need to limit it. Peppermint can cause mild uterine contractions. Thus, you don’t want to drink it at the early tase of your pregnancy.

If you’re drinking peppermint tea to treat your nausea, you might want to consider mint, instead. It can be good for your upset stomach.

As mentioned earlier, raspberry leave tea may be safe during pregnancy as it can ease labor. But you want to avoid it in the first trimester. During your third trimester, you may drink one cup a day to help with labor.

You should avoid licorice tea, though. It is estrogenic and it can lead to fetal anomalies and preterm birth.

Experts don’t recommend black and blue cohosh. These teas can cause miscarriage.

You should also avoid dong quai tea as it can cause uterine contraction leading to preterm birth or miscarriage.

Another tea to avoid is ginseng. It can cause birth defects and growth impairment.

It’s important to note that there’s limited information about teas during pregnancy. Thus, you must drink them in moderation.

If you can, avoid them.

Ask your doctor about their alternatives. If you are not sure if a certain drink is safe, you can always ask your doctor or knowledgeable healthcare professional. Most teas are safe in moderation. But there are still teas that must be avoided during pregnancy.
