With this in mind, self-care is essential for both your physical and mental health. Merely taking your daily needs into account can nurture your overall well-being.

While everyone’s health and wellness needs are different and can even change over time, you should generally focus on three main areas of your life for complete head-to-toe health. Here’s how to get started.

Diet

Your diet has a substantial impact on all areas of your daily life. Physically, not eating a healthy diet can cause you to feel tired and make you more prone to a variety of health problems.

Our bodies run off nutrients, and if you don’t provide your body with the nutrients it needs, you will be unable to function at full capacity.

Diet affects your mental health as well. Not eating appropriately or often enough can make you irritable and angry.

This reaction is a natural response to not having enough food. Your body recognizes that you need to eat and boosts your stress hormones in an attempt to get you on the prowl for your next meal.

While this effect was useful during our hunting-and-gathering days, it is not all that helpful in our modern world.

Try to get at least a little bit of each at every meal. This technique will help your diet stayed varied and increase the chance that your body receives every nutrient it needs.

Taking a moment to turn off our cell phones and take a break from technology can help us refocus and redirect our attention to something more helpful and productive.

Unplugging can decrease unhealthy emotions, reduce our fears of missing out, help us connect with those around us, and even help us understand just how much we use technology.

So, take an hour or two each day to power down your electronic devices and take a break from the internet.

The best time for this is often right before bed or right after you wake up.

However, any time that works best for you is suitable as long as you follow through.

Sleep is a crucial but often overlooked part of our lives. The average human spends nearly one-third of their life sleeping, but we often don’t stop to consider just how vital sleeping is for our health.

No one knows exactly why we sleep, but we do know that if we don’t rest, we can expect to experience adverse effects.

These effects can range from merely being grumpy to death in extreme cases. Just like food and water, we need sleep to survive.

The Guardian explains that more and more Americans are not getting the sleep they need.

This trend is a real issue since not getting the correct amount of sleep can increase your chances of getting depression, cancer, heart disease, anxiety, insomnia, diabetes, gain weight and many other conditions.

If anything is the cornerstone of health, it is sleep.

It is a common misconception that taking care of yourself is overwhelming and nearly impossible.

However, by doing something as simple as going to bed an hour early, you can significantly affect your overall physical and mental well-being. It can also boost your body’s ability to lose weight.
