    Respiratory therapy experts agreed with a New Jersey mother who warned others to stop kissing babies after her infant son contracted a respiratory virus and was hospitalized. 

    In a report, Ariana DiGrigorio shared a photo of her son on Facebook who was in a pediatric ICU to undergo treatment for respiratory syncytial virus or RSV. It is an infection that affects the lungs and respiratory tract. 

    The infant was first staying in a regular room. But he experienced respiratory failure so he was transferred to the ICU. It all came after he was diagnosed with the flu last December. His mother took him to the hospital after he had a fever. At that time, his result for RSV was negative. 

    But in February, he was showing symptoms for flu again. So, his mother took him back to the hospital. And this time, he was positive for RSV. He received breathing treatments for six days while staying in the ICU. 

    Ariana, the infant’s mother, advised adults to stop kissing babies. A kiss to the forehead could already sicken a baby. An adult could still have the flu even if he does not show any symptoms of having the virus. He may still be contagious for up to 24 hours before the symptoms appear. 

    Thus, before you visit your new nephew or niece, try to follow these natural treatments for flu. 

    Natural Respiratory Therapy Tips for Flu

    1.) Drink Lots of Water

    Water keeps your nose and mouth moist. It also assists your body in eliminating mucus build up and phlegm. If you do not like plain water, you can drink coconut water, herbal tea, fresh juice, broth, and sports drink, among others. 

    If you need to urinate regularly, then it means that you are drinking sufficient amount of water. You may be dehydrated if your urine is an amber color. 

    2.) Rest 

    When you have flu, you should get more sleep to boost your immune function and fight off the virus. Make rest your priority as you get back on your feet. 

    3.) Consume Warm Drink 

    It can be warm chicken or beef bone broth. It helps you stay hydrated while it loosens nose and sinus congestion. Bone broth is rich in protein and minerals. Thus, it is an ideal way to replenish nutrients in the body while you are suffering from the flu. Protein will assist in rebuilding your immune cells. 

    When you purchase a ready-made version of broth, opt for low in sodium. Or you can just choose to make your own broth. To make your own broth, here are the steps: 

    • Gather the following ingredients: bony chicken pieces, celery ribs, medium carrots, medium onions
    • Get some spices, like bay leaves, dried rosemary, dried thyme
    • Prepare whole peppercorns and cold water
    • Combine all ingredients into the pot
    • Bring to a boil
    • Reduce heat when it is boiling
    • Simmer for up to four hours. As you simmer it for a longer period, the collagen is extracted more to give your stock silky texture and avoid watery one. 
    • Remove foam with a spoon
    • Strain the liquid while you save the meat

    4.) Increase Zinc Intake 

    Zinc is an important mineral to boost your immune function. It assists your body in giving you more germ-fighting WBC. It eases cold and flu symptoms. It also helps your body fight the virus while it slows down how it multiplies. 

    You may take a zinc supplement. But you can get it from a balanced diet. There are plenty of foods that are rich in zinc. These would include shellfish, lentils, nuts, and seeds, as well as chickpeas and beans. 

    5.) Gargle Salt Water Solution 

    Rinsing mouth with a warm water solution can also do the trick. It is especially true if you have a sore throat. It clears mucus as well. To make a saltwater solution, here are the steps: 

    • Boil water
    • Allow it to cool until it is at room temperature
    • Add 1/2 teaspoon salt to eight ounces of warm water
    • Gargle the solution for 30 seconds to effectively rinse your mouth 
    • Spit it and repeat gargling up to four times

    Avoid drinking the saltwater solution. You should also not allow your kid to gargle if he does not know how to do it properly. 

    6.) Consume Herbal Tea

    There are several herbs that you can drink to fight off the flu virus. One of them is star anise. It contains oseltamivir. Tamiflu, a prescription drug to prevent you from getting the flu, contains oseltamivir phosphate. It has antiviral properties that can effectively fight off flu viruses. 

    Apart from star anise, you may drink green tea, turmeric, fresh ginger, fresh garlic, and cloves. You may sweeten your herbal tea by adding pure honey, royal jelly, and other bee products. 

    7.) Take Multivitamins
