Coronavirus Death Toll is Now Over 1 Million Worldwide

September 29, 2020 by Erliza Lee Leave a Comment

But Johns Hopkins University said that the coronavirus death toll is an undercount.

Coronavirus Death

Despite the health measures implemented, the world is still struggling to contain the growing number of coronavirus cases. Some countries are now experiencing the second wave of the pandemic.

On Monday evening, the death toll has reached 1,000,555. The number is based on the public health data that Johns Hopkins University compiled.

The death rates account for 3% of over 33.2 million cases of coronavirus reported since it was first reported in Wuhan, China in 2019.

But, according to the WHO’s executive director, the death toll is an undercount of the real number of fatalities because of the testing shortages. Some countries are not reporting their cases accurately. They’re minimizing the depth of the outbreaks.

Coronavirus Death 1M While 5000 Deaths Each Day

The number of fatalities reported every day around the world has been steady since July. It averages more than 5,000 deaths each day, even though the number of new infections each day reached over 300,000.

Currently, India is number one in daily deaths. More than 1,000 people are dying from COVID-19 each day. It has overtaken the US, which now has a rate of 700 to 800 daily deaths.

However, in terms of overall deaths, the US still leads with more than 205,000 deaths out of the 7.1 million cases.

Brazil has over 140,000 deaths with 4.7 million infections.

India is third in the overall deaths with more than 95,000 reported.

New infections are climbing around the world. Countries are trying to lower down the cases as fall and winter set in.

Some countries have reopened, even though cases could return.

But the UK imposed new prohibitions on businesses. People are urged to work from home if possible.

In Canada, its provinces introduced stricter measures. They also introduced fines for those who don’t follow the guidelines and continue to pack in larger groups.

Canada’s Prime Minister said that four counties are now experiencing the second wave of the virus. He urged the citizens to wear masks, wash their hands, and continue to practice social distancing.

Coronavirus Compared to Other Diseases

Compared to COVID-19, AIDS killed more than 600,000 people around the world. Tuberculosis cases are approaching 1.5 million global deaths.

The Spanish flu killed over 50 million around the world within two years more than a century ago. But, at that time, there were no powerful microscopes yet to identify the virus or antibiotics that could treat pneumonia.

The Spanish flu killed over 600,000 in the US. However, the deaths didn’t come until the second wave hit and it happened over the winter.

Coronavirus Vaccine

We’re still months away from the vaccine. But winter is setting in the Northern Hemisphere. Experts are expecting the toll to increase.

The WHO said the world may experience another million deaths before the vaccine becomes available around the world.

Is the world ready for it? No one knows.

Countries are getting ready to fully engage in testing and tracing. Many are questioning whether or not we have the tools and knowledge to save lives and prevent further spread of the virus.

On Friday, the Florida governor released an order stating that businesses can now fully open. But Dr. Fauci said that opening the economy at this time is asking for trouble.

Some people just want to get together without wearing masks. They also don’t practice social distancing.

Dr. Fauci said that now is the best time to double down the effort to stop the spread of the virus. Florida has more than 700,00 COVID-19 cases and over 14,000 deaths related to the virus.

He urged Americans to increase public health measures including wearing a mask, hand washing frequently, maintaining a physical distance. And if you are sick, stay home and isolate yourself.
