It has been known that anticholinergic drugs could increase the risk of dementia. But in a recent study, researchers found that there are certain classes of these drugs that form the strongest link.
What are these Commonly Prescribed Drugs
These are the anticholinergic drugs with the strongest link to dementia:
1.) Antidepressants: paroxetine or amitriptyline
2.) Bladder antimuscarinics: oxybutynin or tolterodine
3.) Antipsychotics: chlorpromazine or olanzapine
4.) Antiepileptic drugs: oxcarbazepine or carbamazepine
In the study, researchers revealed that nearly “50% increased odds of dementia” related to the use of total anticholinergic drugs for over 1,095 daily doses in 10 years.
The author of the study said that this research is vital in boosting evidence that showed how anticholinergic drugs could put the patients at risk of dementia.
Furthermore, the study highlights the classes of anticholinergic drugs with the strongest links. This information is vital for doctors to find out whether it is safe to prescribe these drugs.
No Firm Conclusions
The study did not give firm conclusions, however.
The reason for this is that it is just an observational study. There are no definite conclusions yet as to whether or not these drugs could cause dementia.
In that case, you must not stop taking these medicines without first talking to your doctor. The study analyzed data on over 200,000 audits in the UK, from 2004 to 2016.
