The speed keto diet is a modified version of a ketogenic diet. It is still a high-fat, low-carb diet but more restrictive. Unfortunately, many dietitians are not recommending it. For them, it is more unsustainable than the classic keto diet.
What Exactly Is Speed Keto Diet?
This is a kind of diet that combines a keto diet and intermittent fasting. The traditional keto diet consists of mostly fats, moderate protein, and fewer carbs.
Then, you will pair it with intermittent fasting. For IF, you can pick various styles but the most popular is the 8/16 plan. To know more about this method, please read my 5-minute-read article about the 8/16 intermittent fasting method here.
One Meal a Day
With a speed keto diet, you will be eating one meal a day. But you need to follow the ketogenic guidelines.
Eating fewer carbs will assist your body in getting the ketosis state faster. In this state, the body will burn fats, rather than carbohydrate stores to fuel your body.
As a result, massive weight loss, at least that’s what the followers are saying.
Who Created Speed Keto Diet?
It is a digital program created by Harlan Kilstein. According to his website, this program has helped more than 19,000 people.
He has a doctorate in education. He has post-graduate work at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
This type of program is said to be easy to follow. It is designed to assist people in breaking the patterns in their metabolism.
As mentioned earlier, it combines intermittent fasting and one meal a day. It is especially beneficial if you failed to obtain results with the traditional keto diet.
According to Harlan:
“My method of fasting is quite unique. People believe intermittent fasting is difficult. That is – until they see the Speed Keto™️ method. People never go hungry using the Speed Keto™️ system. They report how much extra energy they feel.”https://www.speedketo.com/join
But should you try it if you are struggling to lose weight?
Keto diet, per se, may result in weight loss. When you eat food high in protein and fat you tend to feel full faster. As a result, you can avoid eating more, unlike when you choose to eat simple carbs.
Some studies support the use of low carb, high-fat diet to assist in some medical conditions, like diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
However, scientists will have to research more to understand the long-term effects of this diet on overall health.
In this study, it suggested that a low-carb diet can cause premature death from cancer and stroke, as well as heart disease.
For the speed keto, you may achieve weight loss because your food is restricted. And when there is a calorie deficit, it will lead to weight loss.
Unfortunately, some dietitians are against the speed keto meal plan. One of the reasons is that it is not sustainable. If you cannot sustain it, you will go back to your old habit causing you to gain weight.
Why Speed Keto Is Not Ideal?
In that case, speed keto is only great if you wish to lose weight quickly. It cannot be used for a long period.
To maintain weight loss, though, you must follow a more sustainable plan. If you cannot follow a keto diet, you can find other meal plans that are more sustainable.
The 8/16 intermittent fasting plan is more sustainable, as long as you are eating healthy food and not junk foods.
The speed keto combines a keto diet and intermittent fasting. This combination is not new.
If you go to YouTube and search for keto and intermittent fasting, you will find that some experts are recommending these two plans to achieve weight loss and for overall health. You may check out this video from Dr. Berg.
But in speed keto, though, the author recommends just one meal a day. Thus, the 8/16 meal plan will not fit here.
In that case, speed keto is categorized as a super restrictive diet. It also involves a long period of non-eating because it requires one meal a day plan.
Longer hours of fasting may harm your bladder, lungs and other important organs.
Keto Diet is Quite Tricky
You may modify keto diet according to your preference, like upping your carb a bit while lowering your fat. However, it is still difficult to master. In that case, many people will find it challenging to stick to it long term.
Nevertheless, if you wish to achieve quick weight loss, then keto diet can be an answer. However, the result will be short-lived.
It is a challenging meal plan, especially if you are used to eating more carbs. And if you have sweet tooth, the keto diet can be too tricky to follow.
That’s why dietitians will only recommend it if you wish to cut weight quickly. But it may not be a good lifestyle approach.
On the other hand, if you wish to follow it, you may want to seek a professional dietitian to avoid negative effects.
But if you want a more sustainable weight loss approach, you should consider intermittent fasting. However, I would not recommend the one meal a day approach. It is too restrictive.
If you are a beginner, you should start by fasting for 12 or 13 hours. Then, if your body has adapted to extended fasting, you can fast for 16 hours.
As for one meal a day, you may try it but consult a dietitian first to help you plan your meal, especially if you wish to try the speed keto diet.
