The liver’s function is to eliminate waste products and process nutrients and medicines. If you ate tons of ham, cookies, and lechon last holiday, your liver might need a reset. But you don’t have to follow a crash diet or hours of exercise to get back in shape. Here are some ways on how to cleanse your liver and give it a nice reset for your overall health and wellness.
Before taking you to the tips, some of you may want to know whether milk thistle can help in detoxifying your liver?
Milk thistle contains silybin. People believed that this herb may help this organ to work better. It might even treat liver disease, as stated by other nutrition experts.
Unfortunately, you can’t find sufficient proof that it can detoxify the liver. There are no data that could show that it could make your liver healthier.
There might have evidence that compounds from this herb helped in improving the liver disease symptoms. However, no studies yet that show it could treat liver disease.
Instead of using liver detox products, why not try some of these tips on how to cleanse your liver naturally.
1. Drink Warm Water
You can start your day by drinking warm water. Adding lemon may also help as it can alkalize your body and jumpstart your metabolism. It may also help in curbing your cravings.
What you are doing here is hydrating your body to help the liver in filtering out toxins, thereby, boosting your health and wellness.
However, warm water with lemon in the morning may not be ideal for those who are suffering from GERD. Instead of adding lemon, just drink plain warm water.
Or you may sip on warm green tea before breakfast. Green tea is great in boosting your metabolism and digestive system.
Fennel tea is also an ideal choice. It alleviates digestive issues, like constipation, heartburn and irritable bowels. Furthermore, it provides carminative effects that can soothe the digestive system to thwart gas formation.
2. Try Intermittent Fasting
Again, intermittent fasting is not a diet. It is a lifestyle. It provides the benefits of a fast without having to deprive yourself of food.
The best and most common type of IF is the 16/8 method. In here, you will fast for 16 hours and eat anything in 8 hours.
Some IF followers may drink coffee with grass-fed butter and MCT oil. This beverage is said to leave you satiated while you continue to fast.
Or you can follow the 5:2 IF diet. In here, you will eat a 500-calorie meal per day for two days per week. But you can eat normally the remaining five days.
Another type of intermittent fasting is a 24-hour fast once a week. I’ve done this once and I suffered from a headache and stomach pain.
Among the many types of intermittent fasting, the 16/8 works for me. I’ve been practicing it for a few months now.
Regardless of the IF type, you are following, you need to consume mostly healthy foods.
It’s true that IF has no food restrictions. You can eat anything.
But it will not work in cleansing your liver or helping you lose weight if you consume excessive amounts of calories.
3. Avoid Some Foods
When helping your liver clear out the toxins from the food you consumed last holiday, you should avoid eating animal proteins, such as poultry, eggs, seafood, and fish.
You must also avoid dairy products, fried food, coffee, alcohol, and tobacco.
Stay away from processed foods and don’t drink cold or frozen food.
4. Eat Only When You’re Hungry
Be like Japanese. People in Japan are mostly thin because they only eat when they’re hungry. When you follow their way of eating, you can avoid lamenting the following day.
If you’re attending another party after the holiday, make sure to avoid eating dairy and gluten products. Don’t eat snacks that you would not eat normally.
Instead, enjoy a small serving of food. Eat only when you’re hungry.
5. Opt for Raw Vegetable Juice
To liver cleanse effectively, make sure to consume raw vegetables. However, it can be difficult to eat all raw vegetables.
But it is possible through juicing. The reason for this is that you can add a variety of raw vegetables. Juicing will help you obtain up to five servings of fresh vegetables.
The best thing about it is that you can drink even those vegetables that are not on your list of favorites.
Juicing vegetables is also great if you are suffering from a liver function. It makes veggies easier to digest and readily available for absorption.
Wondering what vegetables to include for liver cleansing purposes? Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower are great. Then, add some vegetables that you like, such as beets and carrots.
These vegetables are beneficial in reducing the acid levels in your body. As a result, they can help in providing a friendly pH balance.
Juicing vegetables may not provide you with great taste. But you can add some herbs to make it palatable.
6. Eat More Potassium-Rich Foods
The recommended daily intake of potassium is 4,700 milligrams. Unfortunately, it is difficult to obtain such number.
But potassium-rich foods are vital in lowering your systolic blood pressure. They also support your healthy heart system while they lower your cholesterol level.
You don’t need potassium supplements. All you have to do is add the following foods to your meals.
- Sweet potatoes: They contain the highest amount of potassium. One medium sweet potato has 700 milligrams of potassium. Although it has 131 calories, it contains a high amount of vitamins C, D, and B6, as well as magnesium and iron.
- Tomato sauce: The nutrients in tomatoes are more concentrated if they are consumed as a sauce or puree. However, make sure to opt for tomato sauce made from organic tomatoes.
- Beet greens: They are all rich in antioxidants. Per cup of beet greens contains more than 1,300 milligrams. Beets are great in cleansing your liver and gallbladder, as well as improving your bile flow.
- Spinach: It contains a good amount of potassium, around 840 mg per serving.
- Banana: It is one of the most common fruits that is added to a smoothie. This fruit can aid in digestion while it helps in releasing toxins and heavy metals from the system.
Keep Your Liver Healthy All the Time
The overall health of your liver is affected by diet, environment, and lifestyle. To keep it healthy, make sure to limit your alcohol intake. If you can avoid it, then it is a lot better.
For your overall health and wellness, make sure to eat a well-balanced diet containing up to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables. Then, maintain a healthy weight and exercise every day.
