    Diphenhydramine is a synthetic medicine used to treat allergies, common colds and hay fever. It blocks certain natural substance known as histamine. It’s a substance that causes you to experience itching, watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, etc.

    Unfortunately, such drug causes serious negative effects to some patients. Certain brands of diphenhydramine were also added to the list of drugs that has been recalled because of their dangerous side effects.

    But fear not. There are home remedies that you can use as an alternative for diphenhydramine.

    Here’s a list of home remedies that you can try each time you experience the symptoms of allergic reaction.


    It has anti-histamine effects that can alleviate your symptoms. By inhibiting histamine in the body, it reduces inflammation, thereby, experiencing fewer allergic reactions.

    In a research conducted in 2005, it showed that respondents who took butterbur extract as a home remedy or alternative to diphenhydramine found relief to their respiratory allergies. In fact, it was considered as more effective than other anti-histamine medications.

    The recommended dosage for this home remedy according to the University of Maryland Medical Center is 500 mg of this herb per day.


    Taking this herb’s extract can reduce your allergy symptoms. This makes it another great home remedy to allergies and natural alternative to diphenhydramine.

    The University of Michigan Health System noted that people with allergic rhinitis who took freeze-dried nettle leaf have found relief from their allergy symptoms. The recommended dose is 600 mg daily. You must only take it up to one week.


    This herb isn’t only effective in improving your libido but it’s also great in reducing your allergic reactions, according to University of Michigan Health System. The flavonoids content of this herb could stimulate and inhibit the effects of histamine on the immune system, thereby, suppressing allergic reactions.

    You may drink a tea made of horny goat weed three times a day.


    This is another amazing home remedy for allergies. Tylophora is a natural alternative to diphenhydramine that can inhibit mast cells found in the lung airways. The best dose of this herb for this purpose is 400 mg a day. But make sure that you use only the dried tylophora for 14 days.
