This month of August is touted as Sight Saving Month and we, at Vimchi.info, would like to give you essential tips on how to prevent eye diseases and blurred vision.
By following these tips, you can keep your eyes as healthy as possible, thereby, avoiding unwanted eye vision problems.
By the end of 2020, it’s estimated that 50 million Americans will have eye diseases. Unfortunately, in the Philippines, we don’t have an accurate estimate for this subject.
However, experts believed that 20% of grade school kids will suffer a certain form of eye vision problems.
In addition to blurred vision, there are plenty more of eye diseases that can lead to blindness. These will include age related macular degeneration or AMD, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts.
Fortunately, these conditions can be prevented or somehow delay their development by taking care of your eyes.
TIPS ON MAINTAINING A HEALTHY EYE VISION
1. WEAR SUNGLASSES
Eye sunburn is possible. It’s a condition that may lead to blurred vision and temporary vision loss.
Too much exposure to the sun can cause damage to the retina. It may also lead to growth of non-cancerous and cancerous cells in the eyes.
Tip: Always wear a pair of sunglasses that can protect against the damaging UV rays.
2. LEARN ABOUT YOUR GENES
Eye vision problems run in my family. My mother, for instance, has cataracts and macular degeneration.
Thus, I regularly go to my ophthalmologist to make sure that I maintain good eye vision.
Tip: Practice healthier lifestyle after learning that eye diseases run in your family. Don’t abuse your eyes by taking long showers after exhausting your eyes from watching TV or reading novels.
3. FOLLOW A HEALTHY DIET
A healthy diet that consists of fruits and vegetables can help maintain your healthy eyes.
Then, a regular exercise can fortify your eye vision, thereby, lowering your risks of having eye diseases and blurred vision later on.
Tip: Make sure that your diet is rich in vitamin C, D, E, omega 3, zeaxanthin, lutein and zinc. Follow a regular exercise, like swimming, running or walking.
4. PREVENT EYE FATIGUE
Blurred vision and some eye diseases can be the result of computer vision syndrome.
Tip: Always practice the 20-20-20 rule. That is, stare at your computer monitor for 20 seconds and look at a certain object that’s 20 feet away from you. Do these things in 20-minute intervals.
5. USE PROPER LIGHTING
You must avoid reading or working in very low lighting as it can only strain your eyes.
Tip: Use a desk lamp and adjust its setting to a point that it makes you comfortable to read.
6. REFRAIN FROM USING EYE COSMETICS
We love to put on eye liner and other eye cosmetics to make us look good. But these items can promote bacteria build up that may transfer to your eyes causing eye diseases.
Tip: Don’t use your old makeup that has been dried up. Instead, always use new set of makeup and store it in a dry place.
MOST IMPORTANT TIP IN AVOIDING EYE DISEASES
Get enough sleep
It’s the best way for you to rest your eyes and keep longer lasting eyesight.
Eye diseases and blurred vision are inevitable as we age. However, we can delay them by following those tips mentioned above.
