When the researchers compared the healthy brains of people and those with Alzheimer’s, they found that the latter had significant tau accumulation in the wakefulness-promoting brain regions. These areas lost more than 75 percent of their neurons.
The lead author of the study, Jun Oh, a lab research associate of Dr. Lea T. Grinberg, said that:
“It’s remarkable because it’s not just a single brain nucleus that’s degenerating, but the whole wakefulness-promoting network. Crucially this means that the brain has no way to compensate because all of these functionally related cell types are being destroyed at the same time.”
In a previous study, researchers discovered that too much napping could be caused by disruptions in the brain areas that promote sleep. They also stated that this issue could contribute to the progression of the disease.
But this latest study analyzed healthy brains and brains with Alzheimer’s. The researchers concluded that the disease affects the brain areas that promote wakefulness during the day. These are the areas of the brain that are first damaged by the disease.
