Regular yoga may influence weight loss. However, it doesn’t work in the traditional sense of how you relate physical activity to weight loss. But how does yoga help you lose weight?

Weight loss usually occurs when your calorie intake is less than your caloric expenditure. Most of us have to change our energy intake and expenditure in order to lose weight.

With yoga, most practices can burn fewer calories compared to traditional exercises, like jogging and brisk walking. However, yoga increases your mindfulness and the way you relate to your body. That said, you’ll be more aware of what you consume. As a result, you’ll opt for better food choices.

This means that you avoid those foods that will make you feel lethargic, like processed foods. You’re more likely to choose foods that will make you healthier, leading to a significant weight loss.

If you’re under stress, you usually eat more. Through the help of yoga, you can combat stress, which will later on influence your eating habits.

    Yoga as Physical Exercise

This type of physical exercise is in vogue with a bunch of celebrities. Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston are just two of the Hollywood Celebrities who love doing yoga.

Yoga is a sophisticated exercise that involves a lot of breathing and relaxation. But how does yoga help you lose weight when you attend a class?

It’s necessary that you enrol in a yoga class that challenges you. You’re going to make sure that, each time you attend a yoga class, your heart beats faster as it’s the key to losing weight with yoga.

It’s true that this physical exercise isn’t considered as a high intensity exercise. However, since it’s a continual activity that runs from 75 minutes to 90 minutes, your muscles are working the whole time. With this exercise, you’re strengthening and lengthening your muscles for more than an hour allowing you to burn off significant amount of calories.

Then again, if you want to see weight loss results, you should engage in yoga up to five times a day to really see body changes. And, just because yoga does help you lose weight doesn’t mean that you can eat what you want. You should also practice a portion-controlled balanced diet.

The key to losing weight with yoga is to choose the right style in order for you to lose weight. To lose weight with yoga, you need to choose those flowing styles and rigorous levels. Vinyasa and power yoga are ideal choices. Most of these classes will last 90 minutes. Thus, they truly offer cardiovascular benefits. While you stretch and tone your muscles, you’re also burning calories.

It’s also necessary that you nurture your inward focus. In this way, you’ll be more aware of how your body will feel throughout your daily activities. With self-awareness, you can think about how you’re going to treat your body well, like eating only when you’re hungry. Being aware of your body will also help you stop eating if you’re already satisfied.

    Yoga and Nutrition

As previously mentioned, yoga does help you lose weight as long as you use it in conjunction with a well-balanced diet. It can help you shed some pounds in several ways. That is if it’s combined with evidence-based diet.

Yoga is more than just a physical practice as it involves all aspect of your lifestyle, like mental attitude, choices of food and philosophical study, among others. The practice of this physical activity and meditation may help develop mindfulness during mealtimes. You’ll be more aware of portion sizes, eating speed and how you prepare your food.

Because of yoga’s ability to help with weight loss, most gym and fitness centres offer at least one or two yoga classes. Its benefits are both mental and physical. It can soothe the pain as caused by fibromyalgia, a chronic condition. Patients with this condition are encouraged to regularly practice yoga because it’s as effective as medication for such disease.

However, yoga isn’t for everyone. If you have osteoporosis, you should avoid deep forward bends. On the other hand, you should avoid headstands if you have neck problems. It’s best to talk to a yoga instructor about your specific issues before you even engage in this type of physical exercise.

    Doctors Recommending Yoga

Yoga has become a complementary and an alternative medicine. There are pieces of evidence that support the use of yoga and other mind-body therapies as a form of clinical treatment.

Most doctors, these days, do recommend their patients for mind-body therapies as their last resort if all therapeutic options failed to alleviate their conditions. However, healthcare professionals are still wondering whether referring their patients for yoga and other mind-body treatments earlier could lead to their less use of health care system.

In the US, one in every 30 Americans is opting for this type of therapy because their doctors refer them to it. It only shows that this therapy has become a mainstream approach to healthcare.

    Yoga and Healthy Eating

While you enjoy doing yoga poses, it’s also ideal that you choose to eat healthy foods. You can start by eliminating trans fat from your diet and focus on the good fats. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, promote healthy heart and brain. It also lowers risk of suffering from breast cancer, especially in post-menopausal women.

It’s also ideal to know the difference between hungry and thirsty. Most of use confuse these two.

We decide to eat when all we need is a glass of plain water. Since drinking is boring, the automatic go-to when we’re thirsty is eating.

That said, if you think that you’re hungry, you should have a glass of water first. Then, wait for 20 minutes. If you’re still hungry, then it’s time for you to eat.
