Over 145,000 dengue cases have been reported in the Philippines, prompting the country’s health officials to declare dengue fever as a national epidemic.

Secretary Francisco Duque III announced to allow local government to use a special quick response fund to fight against the said disease.

What is Dengue and Its Treatment

It is a viral infection that can be transmitted when you are bitten by an infected mosquito. The symptoms show up in 3 to 14 days after getting an infective bite. It affects infants and young children, as well as adults.

    No Treatment Yet

As for the treatment, this flu-like illness does not have a specific cure. However, early diagnosis and management could save lives.

Most of the people affected by this illness are in South East Asia, including the Philippines. In recent years, the severity of this disease has increased in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the Philippines, Western Visayas has the most recorded cases. For three consecutive weeks, seven regions in this country exceeded the epidemic levels.

    Dengue Vaccine

Sanofi is the first to develop a dengue vaccine called Dengvaxia. The Philippines used this vaccine to help prevent this disease

However, the country stopped the immunization when 14 kids died out of 800,000 inoculated from 2016 to 2017.

But the developer said that it could not find proof that would link the 14 deaths to the drugs.

How to Protect Yourself Against Dengue Fever

Improving your health and wellness alone is not enough. That’s why you need to find other ways to protect yourself from getting infected with it.

One of those protective ways is to use insect repellent.

Make Sure to Use Insect Repellent

However, insect repellent should include active ingredients registered in the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). It is safe for breastfeeding and pregnant women.

Choose to use an insect repellent with the following ingredients:

-Lemon eucalyptus oil or para-methane-diol (PMD)

You should re-apply this insect repellent as directed. If you need to apply for sunscreen protection, make sure to use it first before you spray insect repellent to your skin.

    Wear Long-Sleeved Shirts

But make sure that these shirts are treated with permethrin. You may choose to buy permethrin-treated clothes. They can protect you from getting bitten. The effect remains after multiple washes.

Unfortunately, permethrin products might be ineffective if you live in a place where these products have been used for many years. The reason for this is that mosquitoes have developed resistance to it.

If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, make sure that you pack a travel health kit. Apply insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites.

Boosting your immune system may also help. Eat dark leafy green vegetables as they are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients.

Some said that eating durian could help fight the disease.

We also published a post about the benefits of Tawa-Tawa as a natural treatment for dengue. Click the link to find out how Tawa-Tawa may help in treating the said disease. The information provided was sourced from the University of Santo Tomas study about Tawa-Tawa.
