As of February 23, 2020, CDC coronavirus infections in Italy have risen to 132. South Korea, on the other hand, reported 602 confirmed COVID-19 cases. With this number, Italy has become a country with the largest outbreak outside of Asia.
Italy’s government recently announced emergency measures. It quarantines several towns as COVID 19 confirmed cases grew from three to 132 within just a few days. This makes the country the largest outbreak outside of Aisa.
The virus has spread to other nations. South Korea and Italy are stepping up their emergency measures because of the rising numbers of the virus on Sunday.
Currently, it has killed over 2,400 people but it infected more than 79,000. The majority of them are in mainland China.
Shutting Down Carnival Events
As an emergency measure, the country shuts down its carnival events in Venice. Italy’s cases of coronavirus are mostly in the north, including Venice.
Many newly confirmed cases caused all universities to close in Milan and the Lombardy region for an indefinite period. Public gatherings are also banned.
First Case of COVID 19 in Italy
The first cases of COVID 19 in Italy were from a married Chinese couple. They were on vacation in Rome in early February.
Health officials in Italy have not found the ground zero patient yet. This patient may be behind the outbreak in the country.
A man who went to China and thought to infect another man in the said country tested negative.
Strong and Virulent
Italy’s health chief said that this type of coronavirus is strong and virulent. As a result, bishops in various dioceses stated that holy water fonts must be kept empty.
The “communion wafers must be placed in the hands of the faithful,” rather than putting them directly into the mouths of the people by a priest. During the sign of the peace ritual, exchanging kisses and shakings hands is not allowed.
South Korea Case
Recently, the country increased its infectious disease alert to red. It is the highest possible alert because the number of infected people jumped to 602. Furthermore, the death toll has risen to five.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in stated that he was putting this red alert to take powerful steps to prevent the increasing viral outbreak.
With this anti-virus alert, authorities can order the closure of schools temporarily. It also reduces the public transport operation, as well as flights coming and leaving South Korea.
The number of patients getting infected is increasing. However, the virus clusters are not linked to China.
If the coronavirus outbreak gets worse in China, we will experience a shortage of prescription drugs.
It matters because the country is a huge supplier of the ingredients being used in those drugs sold in the US and other countries.
In that case, if the virus continues to spread, it will significantly affect the production capacity of China. As a result, countries that depend on the drugs made from those ingredients would find it difficult to find alternatives.
The FDA stated that the outbreak would not only impact tourism but also medical products. In that case, if the coronavirus worsens in China, drug shortages are possible. It could also affect patients from various countries that rely on those drugs that are made in China.
The fast-spreading strain of this virus is a global health emergency according to the WHO director. General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyseus said that the declaration is made not because of the outbreak in China but also out of fear the virus could reach to countries that cannot contain it.
The declaration, however, did not state that WHO is no longer certain that China could contain the virus. WHO remains positive in the country’s capacity to control it.
There will be a negative global economic impact if this is not contained, according to the IMF chief. Some firms have announced to their consumers that there will be significant hits to their sales.
Tech conferences are also being canceled because of it.
The US State Department increased its travel advisory for Japan and South Korea. The travel advisory is set to level 2.
It means that travelers must exercise caution. They must have a contingency plan for any emergency.
A top US public health official stated that we are on the verge of a global pandemic.
A novel outbreak commands higher attention than having a common illness.
COVID 19 is a serious health threat. It has killed more than 132 people in China alone.
But the US health officials said that this virus is not deadlier than influenza. Rather, influenza is significantly deadlier than CDC coronavirus because it strikes each year.
