Scientists claim that a gum disease bug could play a vital role in the development of Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. The latest finding could help scientists in tackling the progression of this disease.
The bacterium that causes gum disease and is linked to Alzheimer’s disease is Porphyromonas gingivalis. This bug is one of the causes of gum disease that can lead to tooth loss in humans. It is also associated with artery damage.
The study confirmed that the bug causing gum disease is also found in the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Before it was not clear whether or not periodontal disease triggers the disorder or it is the result of the disease.
The findings are just part of the stream of research that suggests bacterial infections might have a role in Alzheimer’s disease.
However, some scientists are not convinced that Porphyromonas gingivitis is the cause of the disorder. They believe it could be a contributing factor but not the cause of the disease.
Cortexyme Inc, a startup from South San Francisco, California sponsored this new study.
It is not definitive yet. However, the British Dental Association stated that the findings could prompt people to maintain their dental health. Brushing teeth twice a day could reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease symptoms.
The researchers stated that the bug infects the immune system cells to access the brain. It also spreads through the cranial nerves. In laboratory tests, they showed that the knots of proteins in the neurons could spur the damage caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
The use of antibiotics will not be effective in treating P. gingivalis once it reaches the brain. During laboratory experiments, antibiotics could not protect the cell from dying as a result of P. gingivalis. Furthermore, the bacteria showed to develop resistance against moxifloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
One of the officers at Alzheimer’s Research in the UK pointed that the said disease could be caused by several agents and one of them is gum disease.
Although it is not fully known the scope of the damage that the bug could cause to trigger dementia risk, it is still vital to maintain oral health. It must be part of your healthy lifestyle and health and wellness routine. It could be that many types of bacteria could cause the condition and not just a single type of bug.
Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
To maintain excellent dental hygiene, make sure to brush teeth twice a day or after every meal. You may use an electric or a manual toothbrush. I use a manual toothbrush in the morning while an electric brush before bedtime.
However, it is more vital to ensure that you clean your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day than the type of brush you use.
Furthermore, it is necessary that you brush with a fluoride toothpaste. I use Glister toothpaste from Amway as it is not too strong. I also noticed that I don’t get canker sores when I use this toothpaste. Then, before bedtime, I use AP 24 Whitening Fluoride Toothpaste from NU Skin.
But don’t just brush your teeth. Make sure that you brush for two minutes per day. There’s an app that you can play to help you achieve the right amount of brushing time.
After brushing, make sure to floss to remove food in between your teeth. Flossing also removes plaques forming along the gum line, thereby, reducing gum disease.
You may practice deep cleaning with coconut oil.
Of course, brushing and flossing may not fully protect you against cavities. The best way to protect your teeth is to avoid consuming sugar and simple carbs. Keep in mind that the harmful bacteria in your mouth eat the sugar left on your teeth. Furthermore, these bad bacteria produce acids in your mouth that can destroy your tooth enamel.
