Being healthy also includes taking care of our eyes. Unfortunately, most of us take them for granted. But have you ever thought of living without seeing the people around you or gazing on your flower garden?

According to a non-profit organization that focuses on providing information to the public about vision issues, more than 50,000 people in America alone lose their sight each year. And a huge percentage of that number is caused by age related macular degeneration.

If you’re at risk, you could significantly prevent yourself from experiencing the pain associated with low vision and blindness by taking care of your eyes while you’re still young.

The tips listed below are some preventive ways for avoiding vision loss and being able to achieve healthy body and eyes. They can also help in averting age related macular degeneration, glaucoma and dry eye disease.

    Eat blueberries

Next week, Vim Chi will be featuring a new product from Nutrilite that helps in improving the health of your vision. The product is called Vision Health with Lutein. It contains blueberry, as one of its ingredients.

Blueberries are rich in anti-oxidants. Those who are being able to eat them every day or multiple times a week have healthy eyes and body.

In the Archives of Ophthalmology, a certain study was published about some men and women who consumed great amount of blueberries. Researchers of that study discovered that these people were the least likely to suffer from age related macular degeneration. As previously mentioned, it’s one of the leading causes of blindness in older individuals.

Eat blueberries in the morning as your breakfast

This is your best chance to improve your consumption of this type of fruit. You can mix blueberries with your favorite cereals or yogurt.

    Have bilberries

They’re also included in Vision Health with Lutein. Bilberries contain high amount of anthocyanosides, which are useful in protecting your eyes against age related macular degeneration.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to obtain bilberries in their natural, fresh form. Hence, the best way to have them is to take a supplement, like Nutrilite’s Vision Health with Lutein.

With bilberry, being able to have healthy body and eyes can be easily achieved.

    Consume spinach

Spinach is another ingredient of Vision Health with Lutein.

There are many ways to prepare spinach. You can steam or sauté it with garlic and raisins.

No matter how you obtain spinach, you must make sure that you eat it at least twice a week.

The lutein in this vegetable is one of the reasons it’s highly recommended to patients who are at risk of having age related macular degeneration. Not only that, it can also help with being able to have healthy eyes.

If you want to eat spinach in its fresh form, you need to combine it with olive oil so the lutein will be better absorbed by the body.

    Eat red onions

Instead of yellow onions, opt for red onions. They contain quercetin. It’s another anti-oxidant that can offer protection against age related macular degeneration and cataracts.

It’s better to eat red onions in their raw form, according to experts. This is because the nutrients in them won’t evaporate during cooking. Thus, they’re still intact when you eat them.

This is another way to being healthy and having better eyesight, even when you grow older.

    Avoid drying your eyes

The air conditioning unit in your car can cause eye dryness. Thus, avoid aiming the vents of your car to your eyes. Instead, aim them at your feet.

If you can’t avoid that, you can wear sunglasses to form a shield.

Bear in mind that dryness of the eyes can cause severe inconvenience. It can also cause abrasions in the cornea. And if it’s left untreated, it can lead to blindness.

    Minimize eye fluid evaporation

You can do this by moving your computer screen below your eye level. This can prevent yourself from staring at your computer. When you do that, you’re minimizing evaporation of fluid from your eyes, thereby, avoiding risk of dry eye symptoms or syndrome.

    Give your eyes some rest

Being able to achieve healthy eyes, despite your age, can also be achieved by getting sufficient amount of sleep. With enough rest, you’re allowing your eyes to fully rest and recover from the strain they’re experiencing while you’re working.

It’s not enough to simply close your eyes for 30 minutes. What you’ll need is to sleep as it lets your eyes to fully recover. Having insufficient amount of sleep doesn’t only hamper your goal of being healthy but also weakens your vision.

Thus, you must aim for 8 hours of restful sleep each night.

During work hours, it’s also advisable that you rest your eyes every 10 minutes. If not, you can aim for every 50 minutes.

If your eyes feel like they’re overly tired, you can close them and place some cold slices of cucumber over your eyelids.

Eat a balanced diet that’s rich in eye-friendly nutrients

You need to focus on eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E. They’re great for your eyesight. Copper and zinc are also beneficial for the health of your eyes.

As previously mentioned, you also need to consume antioxidants. Apart from lutein, you also need to protect your eyes against age related macular degeneration by eating foods rich in beta-carotene and zeaxanthin.

If you can’t consume foods that are rich in those antioxidants mentioned, you can opt to take multivitamins. But make sure that you take them every day.

At first, it’s difficult to remember taking them. But, when you make it a habit, it’ll be easier for you to take them, just like you’re brushing your teeth.

According to several studies, if those individuals who are at risk of developing age related macular degeneration would take multi-vitamins every day, such disease could be prevented.

Other studies also showed that those who are taking vitamin C supplements for 10 years didn’t have signs of cataracts, compared with those who didn’t take supplements at all.

Thus, as much as you can, you need to take multivitamins every day. In addition to Vision Health with Lutein, you can also take Daily vitamins of Nutrilite.

Consume fish at least twice a week

Harvard studies showed that women with a balanced diet consisting of fish had the least risk of dry eye syndrome and age related macular degeneration.

You don’t have to eat fish in its natural, fresh form. Canned tuna fish is enough to protect yourself against age related macular degeneration.

You can also try taking fish oil supplements so you’ll be able to provide your body with the right amount of omega-3s.

    Avoid eating greasy snacks

One of the many ways to being healthy is to avoid eating greasy snacks. But it’s not the only benefit of avoiding this type of food. Rather, it can also prevent yourself from developing age related macular degeneration and other diseases that can lead to blindness.

In several studies, researchers found that those who don’t eat omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in fat-filled snacks, were less likely to develop age related macular degeneration, cataracts and other eye diseases.

Even if you’re consuming omega-3 fatty acids, their protective effects will disappear if you continue eating omega-6. Thus, you must stop now and avoid it as much as you can.

    Wear sunglasses

They won’t only help you look fashionable but they can also assist you into preventing age related macular degeneration. Bear in mind that those who constantly exposed themselves to sunlight are more likely to suffer from the damaging effects of the sun’s rays.

According to studies, fishermen who protect their eyesight by wearing sunglasses significantly reduced their risk of developing eye diseases.

Even if it’s not sunny outside, you must still wear sunglasses to protect your eyes against dryness. Bear in mind that eye dryness can lead to several eye diseases, including age related macular degeneration and cataracts.

Set your alarm every 30 minutes

That is, if you’re working on your computer or reading some magazines. This can help in reminding yourself that you need to look away from your PC for 30 seconds. It can surely help in preventing eye fatigue. Keep in mind that tiring your eyes all the time can lead to some eye diseases, including age related macular degeneration.

    Maintain a healthy blood pressure

Did you know that having a high blood pressure won’t only put yourself at risk of developing cardiovascular problems but you’re also risking your vision?

Bear in mind that the two leading causes of vision loss in the US alone are high blood pressure and diabetes. Thus, you need to maintain a health blood pressure.

    Bottom line

Being healthy takes a lot of effort. But it’s worth it because you’re not only protecting your body against several life-threatening diseases but you’re also preventing yourself against the risk of having age related macular degeneration.

Being healthy requires you to take care of your eyes and entire body by eating the right food and taking the right nutrients. This is a must so you won’t be able to suffer from vision loss, which is way more unnerving than thinking about your weight.
